Mit der 5. Runde ist das Turnier zur Hälfte absolviert. In der Rückrunde spielt nun, mit vertauschten Farben, noch einmal jeder gegen jeden. Vor der Runde war Magnus Carlsen noch Tabellenführer gewesen, und in der Partie gegen Jan-Krzysztof Duda hatte der Weltmeister auch zunächst stark begonnen: Mit einem Qualitätsopfer auf Position hatte er als Schwarzer schließlich eine gute Stellung erlangt. Doch dann überzog Carlsen die Stellung, während Duda einen kühlen Kopf bewahrte und einfach seinen großen Materialvorteil verwertete:

Jan-Krzysztof Duda hatte vor seinem Sieg gegen den Weltmeister fast nur Misserfolg in diesem Turnier gehabt
Für Magnus Carlsen war dies die erste Niederlage in einer klassischen Partie nach zuvor 125 ungeschlagenen Partien.
Die interessanteste Partie der 5. Runde war vielleicht die zwischen Caruana und Aronian. In einem Endspiel mit völlig offenem Zentrum hätte Caruana mit seinem Läuferpaar plus einem Bauern eigentlich ausreichende Kompensation für die fehlende Qualität haben müssen - es gewannen aber Aronians Springer, nachdem einer von ihnen ein Loch vor Caruanas König besetzen konnte.

Lehrreiche Partie: Caruana und Aronian
Alireza Firouzja hatte zuletzt bei einigen Onlineturnieren nicht so richtig reüssieren können, doch in Stavanger zeigt der junge Mann nun wieder, was in ihm steckt: Zur Halbzeit des Turniers liegt er auf Platz 2 - einen Rang vor dem Weltmeister!
Gegen Aryan Tari hatte Firouzja gestern leichtes Spiel, nachdem der Norweger einen begonnenen aktiven Plan einfach abgebrochen und stattdessen einen passiven Zug gemacht hatte: Firouzja gewann einen Bauern, und der reichte im Endspiel für einen lockeren Sieg.
