13.10.2016 – Die 3. Auflage des "Millionair Chess" Turniers fand nicht mehr in Las Vegas, sondern in Atlantic City statt. Auch die ursprüngliche Idee, eine Million Dollar als Preisgeld auszusetzen, konnte nicht mehr realisiert werden. Nach einer Vorrunde wurden die vier top Preise im K.o-System ausgespielt. In der ersten Finalpartie hätte Gawain Jones die Partie gegen Dariusz Swiercz durch Matt beenden können, verpasste das und ließ sich aber bald danach selber Matt setzen. Bühne frei

Die Organisatoren Amy Lee und Maurice Ashley luden vom 6. bis 10. Oktober zur 3. Auflage des Millionaire Chess ein, diesmal nicht in Las Vegas, sondern zum ersten Mal in Atlantic City an der Ostküste der USA. Auch Atlantic City ist eine Glücksspielmetropole, 1976 wurde das Glücksspiel hier legalisiert. Seitdem entstanden viele Casinos, Freizeitparks und Hotels, wobei Atlantic City aber nie die Bedeutung von Las Vegas erreichte. Dennoch ist der Tourismus die wichtigste Einnahmequelle für die 40.000-Einwohner-Stadt. Nachdem aber ab 2006 auch in den umliegenden Bundesstaaten Glückspiel erlaubt wurde, befindet sich Atlantic City, seiner Monopolstellung beraubt, im Niedergang. Einige wichtige Casinos mussten schließen.

Das 3. Millionaire Chess fand im  Harrah's Resort statt. Gegenüber den beiden vorherigen Auflagen des Turniers wurde das Startgeld, aber auch das Preisgeld reduziert. Für den Sieger im Open gab es noch 30.000 Dollar.

Der erste Preis in den weiteren Gruppen betrug jeweils $ 12.000

Insgesamt 400 Spieler fanden das Angebot attraktiv genug, um an einem der fünf Turniere teilzunehmen. Die ganz großen Namen fehlten allerdings. Vom erfolgreichen US- Team spielte nur Sam Shankland in Atlantic City mit. Fabiano Caruana, Wesley So und Hikaru Nakamura zogen es vor, auf dem zeitgleich auf der Isle of Man stattfindenden Open zu spielen.

Das Turnier wurde mit einer Vorrunde mit langer Bedenkzeit nach Schweizer System ausgetragen. Die besten vier nach sieben Runden qualifizierten sich für eine K.o.-Runde, deren Partien dann aber in Schnellschachbedenkzeit gespielt wurden.

Gawain Jones beendete die Vorrunde mit 6 Punkten als Erster. Dahinter kamen fünf Spieler auf 5,5 Punkte und trugen im Anschluss ein Stichkampfturnier aus.

Im Stichkampfturnier setzten sich Emilio Cordova und Jianchao Zhou direkt durch, der junge US-Amerikaner Jeffrey Xiong, nach diesem Turnier jüngster Top-100-Spieler seit Fischer, schied als Erster aus. Darius Swiercz und Rauf Mamedov kamen auf die gleiche Punktzahl und trugen einen Blitz-Stichkampf um den dritten und letzten Platz für das Halbfinale aus. Diesem gewann der polnische Großmeister mit 2:0.
