Der Weltmeister beendete den Tag schließlich mit einem Remis gegen Yuri Krivoruchko.
Mit 4 aus 5 liegt Carlsen allerdings einen halben Tag hinter Sergey Karjakin. Vor nicht ganz einer Woche hatte Karjakin in Baku nach einem Nerven aufreibenden Finale den World Cup gewonnen, nicht zuletzt dank seiner guten Fähigkeiten im Schnellschach und im Endspiel. Beides bewies er auch in Berlin. Sie verhalten ihm zu 4,5 Punkten aus 5 Partien und der alleinigen Tabelleführung.
Typisch für Karjakins starkes und technisch gutes Spiel war sein Sieg in Runde gegen Anton Korobov.
