Maxime Vachier-Lagrave war als Weißer am Ende der Eröffnungsphase mit einem schwer verwertbaren Springer gegen einen starken Läufer auf Seiten von Ding Liren zurückgeblieben. Zudem litt das Spiel des Franzosen an einem Mangel an aktiven Möglichkeiten. In dem letztlich aus dieser Ausgangslage resultierenden Damenendspiel schaffte der Chinese es dann aber nicht, aus seinem Mehrbauern etwas Zählbares zu machen.

Im Duell der beiden Halbfinal-Verlierer Magnus Carlsen und Levon Aronian ließ der Armenier Aronian sich in schwer überschaubarer Gemengelage einige Chancen auf Ausgleich entgehen. Das Endspiel mit einem Mehrbauern, das sich schließlich daraus ergeben sollte, war für den Weltmeister dann nur noch eine Sache der Technik:
