Vier neue Senioren-Weltmeister: Granda Zuniga, Evgeny Sveshnikov, Elvira Berend und Tamara Khmiadashvili
Vorweg und in Kurzform: das Turnier in Italien war aus meiner Sicht eine durchaus gelungene Veranstaltung mit verdienten neuen Titelträgern. Die Spielbedingungen und das Material (Holzbretter und Holzfiguren) waren dem Ereignis angemessen. Die Runden begannen pünktlich, die Organisatoren waren freundlich und engagiert. Die Turnierleiter blieben meist unauffällig mit Ausnahme einer blonden Schiedsrichterin aus Estland, die in ihren hochhackigen Schuhen wie auf rohen Eiern durch den Turniersaal stakste.
Die Siegerehrung war ein recht kurzweilige Veranstaltung mit musikalischem Rahmenprogramm und Weinverkostung. Ein würdiger Abschluss. Natürlich gibt es viel Verbesserungspotential für künftige Veranstaltungen. Die Details.
Rahmenprogramm
Wer am Ruhetag nicht nach Turin ins Filmmuseum wollte, der konnte an einer kurzweiligen Stadttour durch Acqui Terme teilnehmen. Die Fußmarsch war als einstündig angekündigt, dauerte aber doppelt so lang, was zumindest ich als erfreulich empfand. Am zentralen Platz der Stadt konnte man am 1870 gebauten „La Bollente“-Brunnen seine Finger in genau 74,5 Grad heißem Thermalwasser verbrühen. Beeindruckend sind die Bauleistungen der Römer, die das Wasser rund um die Stadt über 14 Kilometer geleitet hatten. Unter meinem Hotel sollte ursprünglich ein Parkhaus gebaut werden, bis man dort alte Mosaiken und Reste eines altes Thermalbades fand. Inzwischen sind die Ausgrabungen zu besichtigen. Überall in Acqui Terme gibt es solche Fundstellen, die von der Stadt heute gepflegt und entsprechend herausgehoben werden. Aus meiner Sicht zum Glück besuchten wir nur eine der Kirchen der Stadt. Italienische Kirchen wirken von außen oft unscheinbar, sind aber innen sehr imposant anzuschauen. Genauso ist es bei der Kathedrale Santa Maria Assunta, mit deren Bau vor mehr als 1000 Jahren begonnen worden war. Innen findet sich ein berühmtes Gemälde „Retablo della Virgine di Monserrat“ von Bartolomé Bermejo, einem spanischen Maler aus dem 15. Jahrhundert und eine Geschichte gab es ebenfalls dazu.

Italien bietet Kulinarisch einiges. Wer auf das Angebot der Vollpension einging, der hatte vermutlich einen Fehler gemacht. Zwar kann es in Restaurants teurer werden, aber jeder hat die freie Wahl. Erfreulich war beispielsweise eine Kombination lokaler Spezialitäten und regionaler Weine im Restaurant „Il Pancia“.
Die Siegerehrung fand einen würdigen Rahmen und ein Großteil der Teilnehmer nahm knapp anderthalb Stunden nach dem Turnier an der Veranstaltung teil. Die Organisatoren zogen das Programm derart straff und schnell durch, dass ein deutscher Teilnehmer das Gruppenfoto der Preisträger (4.-15.) verpasste. Zwischendrin gab es von dem italienischen „Midnight Duo“ kurze Musikeinlagen.
Nichts Neues bei der FIDE
Wie das immer so ist bei Schachturnieren der FIDE spielt Geld eine zentrale Rolle. Die meiste Kritik an der Organisation drehte sich um genau dieses Thema: Der Weltschachbund nimmt vorab 80 Euro Registrierungsgebühr, 70 Euro Startgeld je Teilnehmer. Hinzu kam eine Buchungsgebühr von zwanzig Euro pro gebuchtem Hoteltag. Wie man erst später erfuhr, ging das Geld nicht an das Hotel, sondern diente der Finanzierung der Veranstaltung. Zumindest hat sich mein Hotel geweigert, die Buchungsgebühr in ihrer Rechnung auszuweisen. In den meisten Fällen lag der Organisationsbeitrag also bei über 400 Euro pro Teilnehmer. Ordentlich.
Einige Kritikpunkte will ich kurz nennen, aber nicht weiter kommentieren.
- Die Partien der Senioren-WM werden nicht vollständig erfasst, anders als bei anderen Fide-Weltmeisterschaften.
- Es herrscht keine Transparenz bei den Kosten oder bezüglich der Organisationsbeiträge.
- Spieler müssen in einem der genannten Hotels buchen und können nicht beispielsweise in Apartments günstiger wohnen.
- Die Auswahl der Hotels sichert zumindest in Italien keine ausreichende Internetqualität.
- Die sehr kurze Bedenkzeit (90+30 für den Rest +30 Sekunden pro Zug von Beginn an) ist vor allem im Interesse der Schiedsrichter, die so früher zum Essen kommen.
Während des Turniers fand sich eine Initiative, die sich mit dem Thema einer besseren Organisation von Senioren-Turnieren beschäftigen und mit dem Weltschachbund ins Gespräch kommen will. Dirk Jordan, der bei der FIDE für Seniorenturniere zuständig ist, war für zwei Tage angereist und hat hoffentlich die Bereitschaft sich die Kritikpunkte und Verbesserungsvorschläge anzuhören. Meine Prognose: Die geforderte höhere Transparenz wird es nicht geben. Aber vielleicht die eine oder andere Verbesserung. Die fehlende Transparenz ist kein spezielles Problem im Schach, sondern bei supranationalen Sportorganisationen das absurde oft korrupte Prinzip. Man schaue sich mal die FIFA oder das IOC an. Keine dieser Organisationen lässt sich in die Karten schauen oder gar von außen kontrollieren.
Schach gespielt wurde natürlich auch.
Die Turniere der Frauen
Mit 15 beziehungsweise 22 war die Liste der Teilnehmerinnen recht dünn. Die Veranstalter reduzierten daher die Zahl der Runden von elf auf neun. Das konnte allerdings dennoch absurde Paarungen zum Schluss des Turniers nicht verhindern. In der Gruppe 50+ spielte in der letzten Runde eine Teilnehmerin mit dem blanken Turm gegen Turm, Springer und sieben(!) Bauern weiter. Ich erfuhr, dass die Frau Anfängerin ist. Nicht die Einzige in dem Turnier.
Sieben Runden wären für die geringe Teilnehmerzahl in beiden Gruppen sicher angemessener gewesen. Insofern muss sich die FIDE überlegen, ob es nicht für die Auslosung deutlich besser wäre, die Frauen in einer gemeinsamen Gruppe zwei Titel ausspielen zu lassen. Eine Gegenmeinung dazu hörte ich allerdings von einer deutschen Teilnehmerin, die in zwei Jahren in die ältere Gruppe „hineinaltert“ und sich dann gute Chancen ausrechnet.
Frauen 50+: Elvira Berend überragt
Elvira Berend war die klare Gewinnerin bei den Frauen. Ihr Stil wirkt eher unaufgeregt und zudem spielt sie offenbar gerne lange Partien. Dieses Phänomen fiel ohnehin auf: Während bei den Männern die Entscheidung häufig zwischen dem zwanzigsten und dreißigsten Zug fiel, waren die Frauen oft viel länger beschäftigt. Das mag an der Spielweise oder an der eher vorsichtigeren Eröffnungswahl mancher Teilnehmerin gelegen haben.

Elvira Berend hatte vor der neunten Runde einen halben Punkt Vorsprung, nachdem sie in der Vorschlussrunde eine Niederlage gegen die zum Schluss wie entfesselt aufspielende Griechin Marina Makropoulou hinnehmen musste. Die Griechin errang letztlich den zweiten Platz durch einen hart erkämpften Sieg in der Schlussrunde gegen die spätere Drittplatzierte Galina Strutinskaia.

Frauen 65+: Nona Gaprindashvili und Tamara Khmiadashvili
Die beiden führenden Spielerinnen aus Georgien spielten in der letzten Runde gegen Gegnerinnen, die zwei Punkte weniger aufweisen konnten. 15 Teilnehmerinnen 9 Runden spielen zu lassen, ist natürlich keine gute Idee. Nona gewann in einer Art Initiativetest eine skurrile Kurzpartie gegen eine Gegnerin aus der Mongolei und sah nicht sehr glücklich aus, obwohl sie dadurch noch eine Chance auf den alleinigen ersten Platz hatte. Und tatsächlich Tamara Khmiadashvili benötige die volle Distanz und war nach 69 Zügen glückliche und wegen ihres Sieges gegen die Legende Gaprindashvili letztlich verdiente Siegerin. Beide Spielerinnen gingen mit 7,5 aus 9 durchs Ziel und hatten einen ordentlichen Abstand zum Rest des Feldes hingelegt.

Herzschlagfinale bei den älteren Senioren
Bei den Senioren 65+ kam es zu einem echten Showdown in der letzten Runde. Vlastimil Jansa hatte in der Vorschlussrunde gegen Evgeny Sveshnikov relativ einfach eine Figur eingestellt und seinen halben Punkt Vorsprung dadurch eingebüßt. In der letzten Runde spielten sechs Spieler mit jeweils 7,5 aus 10 gegeneinander. Die Paarungen an der Spitze waren Anatoly Vaisser – Eugenio Torre, Evgeny Sveshnikov – Arkady Shvelev und Lothar Vogt – Vlastimil Jansa. Die beste Wertung hatte Anatoly Vaisser, gefolgt von dem israelischen IM Shvelev und noch etwas dahinter Vlastimil Jansa. Ein harter Kampf um den Titel stand also bevor: Shvelev konnte durch einen Sieg den Großmeistertitel vermutlich direkt erringen. Aber auch falls es nur zu einem zweiten Platz hinter Vaisser reichen sollte, konnte der Israeli, mit einer Rating von 2280 angetreten, im Alter von 66 Jahren eine Großmeisternorm erzielen. Shvelev hatte bis zur 10. Runde gegen fünf Großmeister gespielt und 3,5 aus 5 erzielt (Sieg gegen Torre).
Aber es kam anders: Zunächst spielten Lothar Vogt und Vlastimil Jansa ein relativ unaufgeregtes Remis und verabschiedeten sich so frühzeitig aus dem Titelrennen. Evgeny Sveshnikov gewann souverän seine Partie und musste bis zum Schluss dennoch zittern, da er die schlechteste Wertung aufwies. Vaisser und Torre spielten eine echte Kampfpartie, die nach fast fünf Stunden Spielzeit letztlich gerecht unentschieden endete. Damit war Evgeny Svechnikov erstmals und sichtbar stolzer Weltmeister.

Drei Partien sind als eigene PGNs im Anhang zu finden. Die Partie Jansa – Svechnikov war ein übles Versehen, aber historisch bedeutsam, insofern habe ich die Stellung ebenfalls aufgenommen.

Granda Zuniga gewinnt souverän
Bei den jüngeren Senioren gab es keine Spannung mehr. Der Elofavorit hatte sich von Anfang an die Spitze gesichert und nie mehr los gelassen. Gegen den deutschen Internationalen Meister Oliver Brendel hatte der Peruaner für einen Zug(!) eine deutlich schlechtere Stellung im Mittelspiel, aber das war in dem Turnier der vermutlich einzige Moment an dem Granda in ernster Verlustgefahr war während des gesamten Turniers.

Überzeugend spielte der philipinische Großmeister Rogelio Antonio, der zum Schluss ebenfalls ohne Niederlage auf dem zweiten Platz ins Ziel kam. In der Schlussrunde gewann er noch ein schickes Turmendspiel souverän und mit beeindruckender Geschwindigkeit. Auch Granda Zuniga hatte in seiner Partie gegen den Philipino in einem Turmendspiel etwas Mühe gehabt. Auf Rang drei kam der Franzose Eric Prie ein, der seine vernichtende Niederlage gegen den Turniersieger wegsteckte und den Georgier Zurab Sturua in einer schicken Partie besiegen konnte.
