In den letzten Jahren ist viel passiert im US-Schach. Als Zugpferd als Zugpferd hat der US-Schachverband inzwischen eine der besten Nationalmannschaften der Welt zusammen, wobei die Zugänge von Wesley So und Fabiano Caruana natürlich sehr geholfen haben. Bei der Schacholympiade in Baku ist das US-Team auf jeden Fall Mitfavorit. Aber auch im Nachwuchsbereich passiert sehr viel. Schulschach wird in den USA groß geschrieben. Und so drängen viele Talente und Eigengewächse nach vorne. Das Schachzentrum in St. Louis und sein großer Sponsor, das Ehepaar Sinquefield, spielen dabei eine gewichtige Rolle.

Bei den US-Juniorenmeisterschaften, die am Sonntag im Chess Club and Scholastic Center in St. Louis zu Ende gingen, waren einige der besten Nachwuchsspieler am Start. Jeffrey Xiong gilt mit seinen 15 Jahren nicht nur als ganz besonders großes Talent, sondern war auch der Top-Favorit auf den Titel.

In den letzten beiden Runden reichten ihm zwei Remis zum Turniergewinn. Den entscheidenden Punkt holte er in der 7. Runde, als er im Endspiel mit ungleichen Läufern seinen Gegner mit einem Mattangriff konfrontierte.
