In der abschließenden 9. Runde musste Lalith Babu in seiner Partie gegen die 18-jährige Bulgarin Salimova dann noch einen kurzen kritischen Moment überstehen, ehe er sich ins Remis retten konnte, das ihm in der Endabrechnung zum Gewinn des Turniers reichen sollte

Einen Absturz erlebte Nigel Short, als er in Runde 8 zunächst gegen Salimova und anschließend auch noch gegen Bernadskiy verlor. Auf Twitter gab der erst kurz vor dem Turnier von COVID-19 genesene FIDE-Vizepräsident freimütig (und nicht ohne eine Prise englischen Humors) Auskunft über die eigenen Unzulänglichkeiten:

I never thought I would get to the Vergani Cup, in Cattolica, having failed a PCR test less than 48 hours before I arrived. This tournament is an experiment as to whether I am suffering from “brain fog”. The jury is out on that, although I have played better these last 2 days.

I feel as grumpy as Korchnoi, after that last defeat - & that is not a good sign. Yes, my 2599 rated opponent was dead lost for most of the game, almost blundered mate in 2, & played like utter crap, but that was amply sufficient to beat me. Thankfully there are no more rounds.
