Die beiden vorangegangenen Turniere der Meltwater Champions Chess Tour, das im Februar gespielte Airthings Masters und den Charity Cup im März, hat Magnus Carlsen jeweils für sich entschieden - beim Oslo Esports Cup peilt er nun den Hattrick an. Carlsens Match der 1. Runde gegen Jan-Krzysztof Duda verlief in diesem Sinne schon einmal verheißungsvoll: Der Weltmeister besiegte seinen polnischen Gegner in Partie 1 und 3 jeweils in der Spätphase der Partie. In der Tabelle wird ein gewonnenes Match mit 3 Punkten gewertet. Endet ein Match jedoch 2:2, dann wird es um einen Tiebreak verlängert, der zwei 5+3-Blitzpartien sowie, bei fortgesetztem Gleichstand, eine finale Armageddonpartie umfasst. Der Sieger des Tiebreaks erhält dann 2 Punkte für die Gesamtwertung; der Unterlegene bekommt einen Zähler gutgeschrieben.
