Magnus Carlsen eröffnete die elfte Wettkampfpartie als Weißer mit dem Doppelschritt seines Königsbauern, worauf Caruana sich erneut der Russischen Verteidigung bediente. Angesichts der heterogenen Rochaden hätte sich durchaus ein scharfer Kampf ergeben können, dem Caruana aber auswich, indem er einen frühzeitigen Damentausch herbeiführte. Danach war der Remisschluss eigentlich bereits absehbar, doch Carlsen versuchte alles, um doch noch etwas Spannung zu erzeugen. Es nützte nichts - Caruana spielte einen starken Zug nach dem anderen und es war ihm nicht beizukommen:
