Sinquefield Cup: Anands glücklicher Sieg

18.08.2019 – Beim Sinquefield Cup in Saint Louis sah gestern Abend bereits alles nach einem Auftakt ausschließlich mit Remisen aus, als Ian Nepomniachtchi in seiner Partie gegen Viswanathan Anand nach langer, angespannter Verteidigung ein schwerer Missgriff unterlief. "I'll take it", bemerkte Anand nach der Partie lapidar, als er gefragt wurde, was er in solchen Situationen empfinden würde. Mit weitem Abstand war dies die gehaltvollste Partie der 1. Runde. Am Ende sollte sich wieder einmal eine Binsenweisheit des Schachspiels bestätigen: Langwieriges Verteidigen macht müde!

Carlsen ½-½ Giri

Weltmeister Magnus Carlsen hat bekanntlich in den letzten Monaten einen neuartigen dynamischen Angriffsstil kreiert, dem auch Anish Giri schon zum Opfer gefallen ist. Gestern hatte sich Giri gewappnet: Bereits in der frühen Eröffnungsphase wurde so viel Material abgetauscht, dass Carlsen nicht einmal in die Nähe irgendeines Drohpotentials gelangte.

Nakamura ½-½ Caruana

Auch in dieser Partie zeichnete sich frühzeitig ein Remis ab, weil die entstandene Struktur vollkommen spannungsfrei war. Nakamura pflanzte Caruanas König dann aber einen Bauern direkt vor die Nase und schuf damit immerhin noch einmal einen Aspekt, mit dem Caruana sich näher befassen musste:
