21.05.2020 – Beim Turnier in New York 1924 besteht das Feld aus elf Spielern, dadurch hat ein Spieler in jeder Runde spielfrei, und das verzerrt die Tabelle. Aber nach 17 von 22 Runden hat sich die Situation an der Spitze geklärt. Capablanca hatte in Runde 17 spielfrei, Emanuel Lasker gewann mit Schwarz gegen Yates und liegt jetzt mit 11½/17 ganze 1½ Punkte vor Capablanca, der mit 10.0/17 auf Platz zwei liegt. Lasker bleibt geduldig und kämpferisch

In Runde 16 gewann Emanuel Lasker mit Schwarz eine umkämpfte Partie gegen Richard Reti und auch in Runde 17 zeigte sich der 55-jährige Ex-Weltmeister kämpferisch. Er spielte mit Schwarz gegen Frederick Yates und setzte seinen Gegner in einem Sizilianer von Beginn an unter Druck. Objektiv war die Stellung ausgeglichen, aber mit geduldigem Manövrieren und immer neuen Ideen stellte Lasker Yates kontinuierlich vor Probleme und kam schließlich zu einem besseren Endspiel, das Yates nicht halten konnte.

In Runde 17 kam es auch zur bislang ersten Zeitüberschreitung im gesamten Turnier. In New York haben die Teilnehmer zwei Stunden Zeit, um 30 Züge zu machen, aber in seiner Partie gegen Dawid Janowsky dachte Geza Maroczy zu lange nach und schaffte nur 29 Züge in zwei Stunden und verlor deshalb auf Zeit.
